Any student of branding will notice with alarm the trend that emerges out of the recent rebranding of Microsoft and Ebay: it is this idea of going clean & Swiss with the typography. What is worrying is that this simplicity is being achieved at the cost of unique silhouettes.

I am increasingly in favor of trying to understand vernacular typography—not by its inherent characteristics but—by its complex relations to the mainstream design practices. The term vernacular itself is understood within its polar relation to an elite or a dominant culture.
